Top things to do in Salzburg

Salzburg is located in the west of Austria and is home to the birthplace of Mozart and where the Sound of Music was based.

Even if you’re not a fan of the film or the music this tour is highly recommended. You can book a tour with the official company in Salzburg, Panorama tours https://www.panoramatours.com/en/salzburg/ . They have two time slots available each day at 9:15am and 2pm. Tickets for an adult cost 60 euros and a child under 12 costs 30 euros. Under 3’s are free. The tour lasts for 4 hours. You are picked up from Salzburg city centre and are taken to many of the filming locations such as Mirabell garden, Nonnberg Convent, Schloss Leopoldskron, Hellbrunn Palace and more with plenty of photo opportunities.

Mozart’s House

The birthplace and house of Mozart and his family is located in Getreidegasse 9, Salzburg. Mozart was born here and his family lived on the third floor for a number of years in the 18th century. It has now been turned into a museum. Its an interesting place to learn about the history or Mozart and his music. You can also visit his residence from the ages of 17-25. Tickets for Mozart’s birthplace cost 15 euros for an adult.

Mirabell Gardens

You would have visited Mirabell Gardens if you went on the Sound of Music tour, however it’s nice to be able to take your time strolling through the gardens and spend some more time here. Mirabell gardens was one of the filming locations from the Sound of Music and is a beautiful place to visit. The Gardens are free to visit. You can also visit Mirabell Palace for free.

Fortress Hohansalzburg

Fortress Hohansalzburg is a medieval fortress that sits on top of the Festungsberg mountain. You can either get the funicular up to the Fortress or you can walk. Remember that if you want to get the funicular coming down, make sure you don’t miss the last one, otherwise you will have to walk! The Fortress is open all year round but has different opening hours depending on the time of year, you can check the website here https://www.festung-hohensalzburg.at/en/your-visit/opening-hours . Tickets range from 11.20 - 18 euros per adult or 4.60 - 6.80 euros per child depending on what parts of the fortress you want to visit.

There is a restaurant at the Fortress called Panoramarestaurant zur Festung Hohensalzburg. They offer drinks and food such as Schnitzel, Beef Goulash, fish dishes, filled potatoes and more. You get amazing views of the mountains and the city of Salzburg from here.

TOP TIP!

Aim to eat at the restaurant during sunset, you can watch mountains on one side and see the city below light up on the other.


St. Peter’s Abbey

St. Peter’s Abbey is monastery and former cathedral in Salzburg. You can visit the church and cemetery for free.
