Sound of Music tour
If you’re planning a trip to Salzburg, you should definitely book The Sound of Music tour, even if you have never seen the movie (I only watched the movie a few days before the trip!).
We booked our tour through Panaroma tours https://www.panoramatours.com/en/salzburg/ . Tickets cost €60 for adults and €30 for children 4-12 years old, the tour lasts around 4 hours starting at either 9:15am or 2pm.
The tour takes you around Salzburg and the surrounding area to many different exterior and interior filming locations from the movie.
The tour starts near Mirabell gardens, which is where you will meet your tour guide ready for the day ahead. Mirabell gardens is where the famous Do-Re-Mi song was filmed on the steps along with Pegasus fountain.
Our next stop was Schloss Leopoldskron where the boating scene was filmed. You are able to view the castle from across the lake. The castle is now a hotel and an event venue, it is only accessible to hotel guests and those attending events or conferences.
We then stopped at Hellbrunn Palace where the Gazebo is located. This is where the song ‘16 going on 17’ was filmed. The gazebo isn’t the original, it was rebuilt in the gardens of Hellbrunn Palace.

After that we drove to Nonnberg abbey, this is where Maria was a novice at the Covent and where they filmed Maria leaving the Covent. It is still used today as a working Covent and they don’t allow visitors inside.
After a short drive we passed by Lake Fuschl and Lake Wolfgang, which is where picnic scenes were filmed along with Panoramic shots in the movie. We then stopped in Mondsee for a chance to explore the town and have lunch. In Mondsee you will see the Basilika St. Michael, this is where they filmed the wedding of Maria and Baron Von Trapp. You’re able to go inside the church which is just how it was when the movie was filmed.

After the stop at Mondsee, the coach takes you back to Mirabell gardens where the tour started. Throughout the coach journey the tour guide was fantastic, we were told lots of information about the movie and the history of the locations we stopped off at. They also played many songs from the Sound of Music on our way to each destination which was lots of fun.
