Getting the ferry between Tallinn and Helsinki

Tallinn, Estonia and Helsinki, Finland, are both located in north Eastern Europe with a 2 hour ferry across the Gulf of Finland separating them. It’s such an easy way to see both cities in one trip and to tick off another country.

From purchasing the tickets, navigating the ferry terminal and the journey to and from each city, the process was very simple.

I went online to directferries.com and selected the date I wanted, a rough time and for how many people. Make sure you play around with the times because not all the ferry times come up but once I changed the times, more ferries became available. The ferry was roughly €30 return per person and you will receive an email with your code to enter when you check in at the ferry terminal.

The ferry terminal in Tallinn

Once you arrive at the ferry terminal you need to find the self check in machines. You then enter your code into the machine and it will print both your outbound and inbound tickets. Once you’ve got your ticket, you find your gate and scan your ticket to board the ferry. There are no security checks and the process was really easy and simple.

Once onboard the ferry, you can find somewhere to sit or roam around the boat. It is a very large ferry with many places to eat and drink, a two storey shop with clothes, sunglasses, perfumes, beauty products, alcohol, electronics and many other things to buy. Or you can simply find a comfy seat and relax for the next two hours. The ferry wasn’t at full capacity when we went and there were plenty of spaces to sit.

When you arrive at your destination, you exit the ferry with no passport control and find yourself at arrivals where you can exit the ferry terminal and explore the city.
